Usually about 30 to 45 minutes, as the doctor checks each part of the baby.

What it is

The doctor looks carefully at the baby's head, brain, face, spine, heart, tummy, kidneys, arms and legs, and checks the placenta and the fluid around the baby. At our centre it is done with colour Doppler, so the baby's blood supply can be checked too.

How it's done

You lie on your back and the doctor moves a small probe over your tummy with a little gel. It doesn't hurt. If the baby is in an awkward position, the doctor may ask you to walk a little or turn onto your side.

Why doctors ask for it

  • A routine check of how the baby is developing, around the middle of pregnancy
  • An earlier scan or blood test showed something the doctor wants to look at more closely
  • A previous baby had a health problem, or there is a family history
  • The mother has diabetes, or took medicines that the doctor wants to check for

  • No special preparation is usually needed. Wear clothes that make your tummy easy to reach.
  • Bring your earlier scan reports and your doctor's slip.

Questions about this scan

  • It is usually done around 18 to 22 weeks of pregnancy (the end of the fourth or the fifth month). Your doctor will tell you the best time for you.

  • Yes. Ultrasound uses sound waves, not radiation, and has been used in pregnancy for many years.

  • No scan can find every problem. Some conditions are hard to see, or only show later in pregnancy. The doctor will explain what was checked and what the results mean.

  • Your report is usually ready in 1 to 2 hours after the scan, as a printed copy and online.
