How long it takes

Usually about 30 minutes, sometimes longer if the baby is resting.

What it is

The doctor watches the baby's movements, breathing movements, muscle tone and heartbeat, and measures the fluid around the baby. At our centre, colour Doppler is used to check the blood flow to the baby as well.

How it's done

You lie on your back and the doctor moves a small probe over your tummy with a little gel. The doctor needs to watch the baby for a while, so it can take a little longer if the baby is asleep.

Why doctors ask for it

  • The baby seems to be moving less than usual
  • The pregnancy has gone past the due date
  • The mother has high blood pressure or diabetes
  • The baby looks smaller than expected, or there seems to be less fluid

If your baby is moving much less than usual, or you have bleeding, leaking water or strong tummy pain, see a doctor the same day. Don't wait for a scan appointment.

Before your scan

  • No special preparation is usually needed. Having eaten normally helps, as babies are often more active.
  • Bring your earlier scan reports and your doctor's slip.

  • Usually in the last three months of pregnancy, when your doctor wants to check on the baby's wellbeing.

  • No. It is the same as a normal pregnancy scan on the tummy.

  • The report goes to your doctor, who decides the next step. That might be another scan, closer check-ups, or planning the delivery.
