What it is
The doctor looks for narrowing or build-up (plaque) inside the carotid arteries and measures how fast the blood is flowing. It helps your doctor judge the risk of a stroke.
How it's done
You lie on your back with your head turned slightly to one side. The doctor moves a probe along your neck with a little gel. It doesn't hurt.
Why doctors ask for it
- After a stroke or a 'mini-stroke' (TIA)
- Before some operations, or when a doctor hears an unusual sound in the neck artery
- People at higher risk, for example with diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol or who smoke
Sudden weakness of the face, arm or leg, trouble speaking, or sudden loss of vision can be a stroke. Go to the emergency department straight away.
