What it is
In the veins, the doctor looks for blood clots (deep vein thrombosis, DVT) and for valves that don't close properly, which cause varicose veins. In the arteries, the doctor looks for narrowing that reduces the blood supply to the leg and foot.
How it's done
You lie down, and sometimes stand, while the doctor moves a probe along your leg with a little gel. The doctor may gently press on the veins. It is not usually painful.
Why doctors ask for it
- Leg swelling, pain or redness, to check for a blood clot
- Varicose veins
- Leg pain when walking that eases with rest
- Wounds on the leg or foot that heal slowly, for example with diabetes
- Cold or pale feet, or weak pulses in the foot
A swollen, painful leg together with sudden breathlessness or chest pain can be serious. Go to the emergency department straight away.
