What it is

As well as a picture of the kidneys, colour Doppler shows the blood flow in the kidney arteries and veins. This helps the doctor see whether an artery is narrowed or the blood supply to the kidney is reduced.

How it's done

You lie on your back or side and the doctor moves a probe over your tummy and back with a little gel. It doesn't hurt.

  • High blood pressure that is hard to control, to look for a narrowed kidney artery
  • Checking a kidney transplant
  • Kidney problems found in blood tests or an earlier scan
