Two scans explained
Anomaly scan
A detailed scan of the baby, usually near the end of the fourth month or in the fifth month. The doctor checks the baby part by part (head, face, spine, heart, tummy, arms and legs) to look for any physical problem. Colour Doppler also checks the baby's blood supply.

A scan later in pregnancy to check how the baby is doing: its movements, breathing movements, muscle tone and heartbeat, and the blood flow, using Doppler. Doctors often ask for it if the baby is moving less, or near the due date.

The centre's own advice, in Urdu. A short English summary is above each part.
Tell your doctor
In short: Tell your doctor about any illness you have had, such as TB, hepatitis, high blood pressure or dizzy spells. Also tell them about any problem in an earlier birth, such as high blood pressure, sugar in the urine, heavy bleeding, a caesarean, or losing a baby.
First three months
In short: Take no medicine without your doctor's advice. Rest in the first three months and avoid heavy work, travel and climbing a lot of stairs. If there is any bleeding or spotting, see a doctor straight away. Have your blood group and other blood and urine tests done.
Middle three months
In short: Near the end of the fourth month, have an ultrasound and colour Doppler scan. It can find a physical problem in the baby, and colour Doppler checks the baby's blood and food supply. Most mothers feel the baby move in the fifth month; if you don't, ask your doctor.
Last three months
In short: Have your protective injections in the seventh and eighth months. Watch the baby's movements: if they are fewer over 12 hours, see a doctor at once. Also see a doctor at once for bleeding, leaking water or tummy pain. Have your blood pressure checked twice a week.
Diet advice
In short: Have 2 glasses of milk and some yoghurt every day for calcium. Eat salad and vegetables, and a fair amount of meat, fish, eggs or cheese. Have bread, roti and porridge, ideally made with wholemeal flour. Avoid rice, chicken, beef and fast food. Eat 3 meals a day, never skip breakfast, and don't snack between meals. If you are low in iron, have liver, black chickpeas, and two dates with milk every day.
