Colour Doppler ultrasound

Colour Doppler is an ultrasound that also shows blood moving. Blood flowing towards and away from the probe shows up in different colours, so the doctor can see which way the blood flows and how fast. Like all ultrasound, it is safe and painless and uses no radiation.

What it's used for

  • Blood flow in the arteries of the arms and legs
  • Looking for a blood clot in the veins (deep vein thrombosis)
  • The carotid arteries in the neck, which carry blood to the brain
  • Checking the size and shape of a bulge in the main artery (aortic aneurysm)
  • Pregnancy: the blood and food supply to the baby
  • Blood flow in the thyroid gland, breast and other organs

How to prepare

  • Abdomen scans: usually come fasting (no food) for about 6 hours.

  • Pregnancy / Pelvic Ultrasound

    During the first 3 months of pregnancy, or for pelvic ultrasound, drink 3 glasses of water before the examination and keep your bladder full. Do not urinate before the examination. No special preparation is required during the last 6 months of pregnancy.

    حمل کے پہلے 3 ماہ کے دوران یا Pelvic Ultrasound کے لیے معائنے سے پہلے 3 گلاس پانی پی کر مثانہ بھرا رکھیں اور پیشاب نہ کریں۔ حمل کے آخری 6 ماہ کے الٹراساؤنڈ کے لیے کسی خاص تیاری کی ضرورت نہیں۔

  • Bring any previous reports and your doctor's slip.

  • How long it takes

    Most scans take about 15 to 45 minutes, depending on the part of the body being checked.

    Your report is ready in 1 to 2 hours, as a printed copy and online.

Greyscale or colour Doppler: what's the difference?

Greyscale

Shows the shape and size of organs, or the baby, in black and white. It is used for most everyday scans.

Colour Doppler

Shows the same picture, plus blood flowing, in colour. It is used when the doctor needs to check blood flow or blood vessels.
